RE: Just got a call - they damaged our new truck in transit!

Check the market for early 2007 Dodge Rams. They still have the tried and true 5.9L CTD. That is the last year model before the 2007 1/2 got bogged down with the clean diesel technology which is still questionable as far as longevity goes. pcm l

RE: Just got a call - they damaged our new truck in transit!

I bought my Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 CUMMINS turbo diesel for the engine. I would have much prefered the Chevy or even the Ford for comfort and some other features. However, I wanted the most reliable, easy to service diesel. After much research, I determined that to be the Cummins. It has a very good reputation for many, many years. I have talked to and read about many Ford owners who say they'd love the Ford trucks in they could have a Cummins in it. I have put 26k trouble free towing miles on the Cummins. It pulls strong and gets 12 mpg pulling my 9k lb fiver at 70mph. May I suggest you do some reading on the various on line forums for each of the big 3 diesels. That's my 2 cents. good luck in your choice. PCM

RE: 35-50% OFF?

Sounds like 50% off is a good sarting point for all the left over 2008 Chevy's sitting around the country on the bankrupt/closed-down Bill Heard dealerships. ??? What is going to happen to all the inventory of New cars and rv's when manufacturers go out of buisness? PCM

RE: Small 5th wheels- new models?

I have a couple of friends that are in the market for the infamous Rockwood Classic Signature Ultra Light 8280ss fith wheel. When you look at pin weights, Rockwood/Flagstaff is the leader in the light weights. I know. I have helped them search high and low. It's very difficult to find 1/2 ton fivers with pin weights of less than 1200lbs. The pin weight is a huge consideration on a 1/2 ton pick-up due to the payload of a 1/2 ton. By the time you add 2 to 4 passengers in the truck, the truck is at it's limit. If you think of any others, post them. My friends are having a hard time finding the Rockwood they want. None in stock! RE: New Tires for a 5th Wheeler

Due to all we have all read on this forum about 15" ST tires, I made the switch this year to 16" LT BFGoodrich tires. That's despite never having trouble with the stock 15" Marathon tires. We ALWAYS maintained cold 65psi, towed at 70mph in the FL heat, and never had a problem in 6k miles. It seemed every trip we'd see someone on the side of the road with a blowout. So, as a measure of safety and peace of mind, we switched. I have never read of problmes from anyone with the LT tires. I, too, tow a Keystone Outback Sydney edition fiver. pcm

RE: adding outlets?

I ran a new 110 outlet for the slide out. Tapped it right into the converter and added another breaker. Added another 110 in the kitchen near the stove. Same thing - dedicated line with breaker. pcm

RE: Stink out of Carpet

Another good product that is actually designed for mold/mildew control and to remove odors is Concrobium. The product itself has NO odor at all and I have had great luck with it on some carpet that soured due to a leak. The carpet is like new now. I'm not sure how it will work in your situation, however, it may be a good item to keep on hand. Good luck. pcm

RE: FORD FLARESIDE 6.5 foot box

Well, my buds think they have found the solution to their fiver hitch clearance issues. It's the Sidewinder pin box. If I had known about this device, I would hve opted for it instead of my slider hitch. I do not think the weights of the trailer they want will be a problem. The Rockwood is less than 7klbs and hitch weight right at 1000lbs. They feel better now! Thanks. PCM

RE: FORD FLARESIDE 6.5 foot box

Hopefully, with careful measurement between their new truck and my RAM, we can make a determination this weekend. Of course, BEFORE they get a fiver hitch installed AND order this new Rockwood fiver. I think the Rockwood has the same Lippert pin box that my fiver has. Thanks to all who have had this situation or eperience with this situation. PCM

FORD FLARESIDE 6.5 foot box

I have a couple of friends who just purchased a new 2008 Ford FLARESIDE pick-up with the 6.5 foot box. They purchased this truck with the intent of towing a 2008 Rockwood 8280ss fiver. Here is the problem. The flareside box is not as wide as the styleside (regular, traditional style). The distance between the bed rails is not as great. I am concerned that they will not be able to to tow any fifth wheel rv with an extended pin box due to the extended pin box clearance at the side of the truck box when making turns. Does anyone have experience towing fifth wheel rvs with flareside pick-ups. Thanks. PCM

RE: Adjusting Lippert extended pin box

Ok, since I can't raise the pin box now due to the cross member, I decided there has to be a way to lower the king pin plate on the hitch in the truck. I had one last set of holes that I previously tried to use, however, the holes did not line up due to the weld joint on the top of the slider assembly. So, I decided a nw set of holes through the slider assembly> No problem. Just a batter of drilling 4 sets fo holes for the 4 bolts. Wrong! I drilled 1 set of holes after careful evaluation and consideration. The space was so small due to cross members and the slide lock mechanism. The bolt went through the hols just fine. However, when the slider mechanism is operated, it hits the bolt and will not operate. NOT! So I am at my limit on both the king pin AND the fifth wheel hitch. Looks like the only way to change things now is to raise the trailer suspension. Oh, well. PCM

RE: New PUMA is junk

We purchased a 2006 Puma 25rs and found the quality, fit and finish to be very good. We looked closely at other comparable trailers of the same layout. Keystone/Springdale made the identical floor plan. We choose the Puma due to a more appealing interior and more attention to detail, AND lower price. We DID have one problem that we noticed just prior to trading it in. That being water dripping from the rear underside. We diddn't figure out what it was from, but we assumed some kind of plumbing leak. Sorry you are having problems. We thought the Puma was a lot of bang for the buck. May I suggest you take your time and go over the trailer and document in detail all your findings. Compose it into a kindly written letter to Puma's customer service department AND to your dealer. I know its frustrating, but unless your state has some kind of lemon law, you will probably have to let Puma work it out. Good Luck and be patient. PCM

RE: New Truck

Keep shopping all the dealers within a 100 mile radius of your home and wait till closer to the end of the year. Trcks are selling poorly and the '08 will be considered left over plus the dealer does wan to pay the taxes on all the vehicles on his lot come 01/01/09. You can buys used loaded 2008's for mid to upper 30's. Good luck. PCM

RE: E Z Flex

Yes, I converted ours on a double axle fifth wheel. I have several comments here about it. I did it when I changed over to LT tires from ST tires. When I did so, I lost the "shock supression" offered by the soft wall ST tires. I started getting broken eggs in the refrig after the install of the LT tires. Since the install of the E-Z Flex, that is no longer a problem. You will get the added benefit of greaseable shackle fitting, too. At 6k mile change over, many of mine were already badly worn. RE: What's the proper way in use king-pin stabilizer?

Level the the fiver in the normal manner. Lastly, position the king pin stabilizer and tighten by hand. If you use the front jacks to tighten it up, you risk putting way to much weight on the stand. In the process you may lower the nose throwing it out of level. Simply snug it up by hand. pcm

RE: CAT -vs- Cummins

I agree it is like a Ford vs Chevy debate. However, having grown up in a heavy construction equipment family, CAT would win hands down. Construction is what they are know for. Cummins sevice facilities are more widespread. It is true that CAT is discontinuing their on road engines in the near future. They will be used for heavy equipment only. My opinion, is go with Cummins. pcm

RE: spring shackles

Our fiver, an 8100lb Outback Sydney with 5100lb alxes, was 18 months old with about 6k miles on it when we replaced all the spring bushings and spring equalizers with the Dexter E-Z Flex Equalizers and spring bushings with wet fittings. We could not believe the wear on the nylon bushings. The trailer rides better now and we hope that the wet fittings will encrease the life of the suspension AND trailer. Eash side took about 3 hours. Well worth it. PCM

RE: Prodigy Brake Controller Setting?

Mine is set on 9 with boost on 2 for highway driving. This is on a dry weight fiver of 8200lbs. Sometimes I think that isn't even enough! But through trial and error, I'm comfortable with the setting of 9. Many factors can effect each individuals settings - trailer weight, drum/brake size, brake adjustment, and trailer weight. Keep in mind that it may impossible to "lock-up" the brakes as described in the Prodigy manual. That is right our of the Dexter manual. pcm

RE: Adjusting Lippert extended pin box

PCM1959.....It happens...my hitchhiker had another set of holes above the ones I was using, but when I tried to go there the rear of the Pin assbly hit the cross bar. I was able to just grind out a small notch at the rear corner of the pin box to fit in and around the cross rail. Didn't take much to allow me what I needed. Since it was all well above and behind any of the mounting hardware, nothing was compromised....Hope this helps....Brian Good suggestion. I wish I could do that. Mine must be made differently unless I'm not understanding you. The top of my pin box is flat across the top from side to side. The top of it hits the cross member bar the entire width of the pin box. In my case, It sounds like I'd have to notch out the cross member all the way across. I'm going to investigate the option of drilling some new holes in the slider assembly - the part that supports the acutal fifth wheel. PCM
